Cheap | Budget | Affordable | Inexpensive | – how to choose wedding centrepieces you can afford!

Happy Monday everyone!!

Regardless of what you’re calling them – cheap, budget, affordable, or inexpensive…. centrepieces that don’t cost an arm and a leg don’t have to look like they didn’t! And for the record, I HATE the word “cheap”. When I plan a wedding on a budget, the first thing I tell my clients is that I don’t want a dollar store event. Ofcourse, planning a wedding on a budget requires a tremendous amount of patience and creativity. Not all brides can walk into a decorator’s showroom, pick, choose, pay for what they love, and check it off their Planning To-Do List. When planning with limited financial resources, brides often find themselves doing more research on what to buy, where to buy it, and how to have it come together seamlessly to create luxe, on a budget! (this is where this website comes in!!)

In the past two years that WG has been planning weddings, I’ve come to realize that as far as decor is concerned, centrepieces tend to top the list of priorities brides have in planning. Once the venue is selected, the dress is chosen, and a colour / decor scheme is finalized, centrepieces tend to be the next most difficult element to tackle – largely because there are so many options! This blog is being written to help you narrow down what you like, what you don’t, and how to make it all affordable.

[Centrepiece | Wedding Decor |  Flowers]

I’ve heard it all. Every decor myth you can possible imagine – I’ve heard it.

Myth: Flowers are the most expensive centrepiece option

— While large, elaborate floral centrepieces can be pricey, it’s not always the flowers in the arrangement that dictate the price – it’s the amount of work that goes into putting each piece together! If you have your heart set on flowers, decide how important it is to you that the arrangements be large, striking, and over-the-top. If you’re looking for something like this, yes – your floral invoice will be hefty….

… but if you’re happy with elements of florals without an entire nursery dispersed among your reception hall, there are quaint, dainty, elegant options that are significantly more affordable! Because of how much less work is involved, loose floral centrepieces can be much more affordable floral alternatives:

This particular bride even incorporated the element of loose flowers into a guest favour, placing a cellophane baggie with tie on every place setting. The baggie was printed with the following:

[Centrepiece | Wedding Decor |  Vases]

Myth: The taller the centrepiece, the more expensive the vase

Granted, if there’s a lot of glass, and especially if the glass is curvy, vases can be pricey – but this is where creative shopping comes in!

1) Buy previously-loved

When a bride gets married and doesn’t give away her centrepieces, she’s left with dozens of vases she has nothing to do with. I created the WeddingGirl.ca Bridal Marketplace to give newlyweds the opportunity to sell the picture-perfect elements of their wedding they have no use for anymore, and for brides-to-be to benefit from the extra savings!

2) Buy wholesale

When planning on a budget, and when wanting to make inexpensive things look all-kinds-of-fabulous, I’m a big fan of wholesale. The Marketplace sells wholesale vases, candles, and other decor pieces. The more you buy, the less it costs, and the quality is significantly higher than dollar-store finds!

3) Less is more

You can either choose one, single, tall, curvy showpiece vase to be the focal point of your table design….

… or you can create a stylishly low, mounding tablescape design using lots of smaller,  lower (read: affordable) glass pieces….

Make sure to embellish vases with ribbon to add a splash of coordinating colour! (but as was the case with this particular centrepiece, be VERY careful what you choose to fill the vase with! – who knew limes (even at wholesale) were so expensive!)

4) Mis-Match

Rather than buying 15-20+ of the same vase, frequent the Clearance section of your nearby Homesense or Winners and look for coordinating centrepiece vessels (i.e. all white ceramic, all vintage glass, etc) at discounted prices. So long as all the vases fit within your overall decor design, your guests will never know how much you saved! (if you have questions about design, be sure to ask us!)

[Centrepiece | Wedding Decor |  Vase Filler]

Myth: Vase fillers are always pricey

Depending on what you choose to fill vases with, your centrepiece budget can stay right on target, or go right through the roof! If you opt for options like acrylic gems, gel beads, pearls, or glass ornaments, make sure to buy them wholesale. Many of these are available in the Marketplace as well.

1) Choose smaller vases

The smaller the vase, the less filler you need to buy. You can also create a tablescape effect by only filling one of the vases with a coordinating filler, and choosing less expensive options for the rest.

2) Fill with bigger objects

Save by filling vases with large floral blooms rather than tiny ones, for example peonies instead of orchids, or even large rose petals instead of stephanotis.

— the Add-A-Ribbon trick works here too!

3) Go Organic

Anything you buy in bulk from a grocery store will likely be much less expensive than buying synthetic wedding decor. Think coffee, beans, and fruit – but do your research! like I said, I had no idea how expensive limes were when we planned the lime/purple/damask centrepiece pictured above!

(A special thanks to TheKnot.com for all this inspiration!)

4) Go H20

Water is about as free as they come – and if you tint it, you can create some amazingly fresh and creative centrepiece designs!

5) Skip the Filler

I once showcased bride-to-be, Gillian, on the blog – and her fantastic idea to cover apple juice tins to use as centrepiece vases rather than purchasing glass. Want to save money? Use paper, ribbon, even birch wood… and cover just about anything to create a stunning decor showpiece on your reception tables!

[Centrepiece | Wedding Decor |  Candles]

Myth: All candles are created equal.

As I learned at the wedding where the Dollar Store candles nearly lit our venue on fire, not all candles are created equal!!  While candles will ALWAYS create an elegant glow around any centrepiece, be sure to know the following when making your candle purchase:

1) Know the rules

Most venues will not allow candles that aren’t enclosed in glass. Usually, an inch of glass above the wick is fine, but some halls have special rules (i.e. 4.5″ of glass above the candle!) – be sure to know these before you buy candles

2) Know the burn time

Unless you plan on asking someone to replace your candles mid-way through dinner, avoid tealights. The typical tealight candle only burns for 2-3 hours. When buying votives for your wedding, make sure they are 10-15 hour burning candles.

3) Know the quality

The cheaper the candle, the cheaper the quality. Sure, you can buy super inexpensive candles just about anywhere, but make sure to burn them on a trial run prior to your reception. If the candle gives off black smoke, this means its made with poor quality wax, filled with lots of by-products. This black smoke not only irritates your guests, but increases the likelihood of setting off smoke alarms. Definitely not something you want to do on your wedding night (we learned this from experience!)

4) Know the limits

As much as I ADORE candlight, there is such thing as too much. Too many candles require lots of set-up / time to light them / cleanup at the end of the night, and can actually increase the temperature of your wedding venue. I’ve found that 5 is a good average number of candles, and 8-10 creates a very candlelit feel… but any more is definitely excessive and not necessary.

[Centrepiece | Wedding Decor |  Non-Floral]

A few months ago, OnlineWeddingGirl MillyHa wrote an awesome blog post on non-floral centrepiece options. Make sure to keep this in mind when getting creative while trying to save!

Whatever you choose to use for your centrepieces, there are areas to splurge, places to save, and details to skip all together. Regardless of where your priorities lie, I have no doubt your guests will love anything you put together!

Happy Planning!

Sometimes people uncover hidden talents…. and suddenly find themselves soaring among the stars!

Blog love <3

Thanks to my good friends, Wanda and Brian, over at Studio67, I had the opportunity to meet and work with an incredible Bride-To-Be, Wendy.

When Wendy and I first met, she was a few months shy of her Mexico destination wedding and at-home reception here in Ontario, and we set off to work together and make sense of all the ideas she had in her head, but couldn’t really create a wedding vision from. A big part of what I do as an event stylist is to learn who the bride is, what she likes, and how these personality characteristics can transition into a picture-perfect wedding day that is completely reflexive of who she is as a person. Within our first few meetings, I learned that Wendy and I had very similar styles… we liked all things girly, all things pretty, and I dubbed Wendy my Shabby-Chic, Vintage bride.

I learned that Wendy was classic, timeless, elegant, and based on these traits, we conceptualized her Champagne | Pearls | Lace themed wedding reception (primarily based on this photo!)

In January of 2010, Wendy, along with her groom-to-be Michael, friends, family, and the Studio67 production crew, flew to the Mayan Riviera in Mexico to celebrate Happily Ever After in the sand, among the palm trees. Here is what Studio67 created to capture the occasion:

Wendy + Michael | Mexico from Studio67 on Vimeo.

A few days after their return from the tropics, Wendy and Michael again celebrated their nuptials in classic style with a stunning at-home reception (despite being planned on a budget!) with DIY Centrepieces, fabulous DIY Table Numbers, and lots of creative personal touches!

Although, Wendy and Michael’s wedding(s) were not the end of our relationship. I’ve been lucky enough to call Wendy a friend now, and to see this once-blushing bride grow, learn, change, and develop, into an individual who has touched my life just as much as she claims I’ve touched hers!

I write this blog post to showcase someone of so many special talents. I sent Wendy a text message yesterday saying, “You make my soul happy”. Today, I’ve decided to share that happiness with all of you – because while you’re hustling and bustling to plan a wedding, it’s the little things that add a bit of sunshine to your day!

Wendy has recently become the author of an amazing blog, Life Wrapped In Lace - that has quickly become one of my favourite, and most-read websites! As Wendy calls it, LWIL truly is written For the eyes. For the heart. For the ears. For the feet. For the soul. and it is most definitely an escape from everyday, with all things beautiful.

While on her search for all things beautiful, Wendy recently stumbled upon a fancy new camera, and a whole new passion was ignited – photography!  Inspired by numerous insanely talented visual artists, Wendy has taken to creating her own beauty rather than searching for it via others. Here are some of my most recent favourites…

It was this last photo that made me realize how Wendy’s stylistic talents and keen eye for details can become a tremendous benefit to all the WG brides who frequent this site for inspiration in designing their own events. Stay tuned for a formal introduction of Ms. Wendy Alana, Lifestyle Designer for WeddingGirl.ca!

In the meantime…. all I can do is watch in awe as this woman transforms the everyday into the extraordinary… one ruffle, pearl, and pink Scrabble word at a time.

An Autumn Happily Ever After | Dundurn Castle Wedding Ceremony | Carmen’s Banquet Hall Reception

This past weekend, WeddingGirl.ca coordinated an Autumn Happily Ever After for sweethearts Angela and Eric! Our wedding bliss began on Saturday afternoon with a rehearsal that we chose to hold on the waterfront in Burlington, at one of my favourite spots just below one of my favourite restaurants and wedding venues, Spencer’s On The Waterfront. This was our view as we practiced for Angela’s and Eric’s I Do’s!

After the rehearsal, I picked up all the pieces of the wedding I’d be setting up behind the scenes, and bright and early on Sunday, our wedding day began! Two Melissa’s from Pretty In Pink provided our bridal party with mobile hair and makeup services on site at the Courtyard Marriott on Upper James, where the bride stayed the night before. I stopped in to check on the girls mid-morning, and the hotel room was a whirlwind of hairspray, curling irons, and colourful makeup everywhere! The fabulously talented Andrea from Splash Photography was already busy taking pictures…

The flowers, from Mostly Roses, arrived just before I got there: a blend of dark reds, whites, and hints of green.

One of my favourite videographers, Chris from Fresh Canadian Content also arrived while I was visiting with the girls and began his wedding day filming. One of my favourite things about working with Chris and his staff has been the tremendous number of compliments I get about his work – not only from the bride and groom, but also the vendors who find that working alongside him is smooth, seamless, and completely enjoyable! This is the perfect example as to why personalities are so important when selecting your wedding vendors: you want to make sure everyone gets along on the day of!!

Once I left the hotel, I traveled back to the reception venue, Carmen’s Banquet Hall, and put the finishing touches on decor. I put together the centrepieces, embellished the head table, cake table, and the receiving table to match our burgundy/black/white wedding theme, and set out the escort cards in the lobby. If you haven’t hired a Day Of Coordinator, make sure to put someone in place to do all the little things!

Despite being planned on a budget, this wedding was all-class, with a marked design theme and personalized touches throughout the entire design concept. The bride lovingly poured over the smallest details, including personal place setting cards (DIY on embossed damask paper), bubbles for the guests at the ceremony elegantly tied with themed black ribbon, and even an engraved cake and knife set to adorn the cake table.

Angela and Eric’s wedding was my first opportunity to work alongside the staff at Carmen’s, and I must say, it was an absolute pleasure. Throughout the evening, I had the Carmen’s Maitre D’ assisting with all the ins and outs of the reception, helping me to ensure that everything ran smoothly, and all the members of the staff that I came into contact with were incredibly friendly and helpful (which isn’t always the case!)

The service at Carmen’s was great, the food was excellent, and Angela and Eric had, what they called, the “night of their life”! … after all, isn’t that what matters most?

Angela and Eric have been together for a long time, so their wedding day was simply a celebration of the union they already shared, and an opportunity for friends and family from near and far to celebrate in their love for one another!

A huge Thank You goes out to one of the most helpful wedding parties I’ve ever worked with, and family and friends that made my day with them just as enjoyable as I hope theirs was with me. All the best!!

Bridal Board Message Forums | Bridal Marketplace Updates | and more!

There’s a whole lot of house cleaning happening over here at WG!

I’ve finally had the opportunity to catch up on so many of the back-logged administrative items I’ve been putting off, and the Bridal Boards and Marketplace are just a few of them!

{Wedding Planning Message Boards}

When the old WG was up and running, the Bridal Boards were a place for brides to share ideas, get inspired, connect with one another, and vent about all-things-wedding. Because it was initially a free program, the message boards weren’t as user-friendly and smooth as they could be. Since the launch of the newly re-designed WG site, I’ve decided to update the Bridal Boards to a more sleek, more smooth, more user-friendly message board forum. Make sure to register, log in, and get connected!!

{go Green! | Buy + Sell new and previously-loved wedding stuff!}

Because no bride has any reason to keep 450 votive candle holders after her wedding reception, and it’s always important to reduce, reuse, and recycle, WeddingGirl.ca is trying to help you Go Green! Register for the Bridal Marketplace and list your dress (bridal, bridesmaid, whatever!), your sparkle (jewellery, accessories, bridal swag), the details (decor, etc) or browse the Marketplace for things you’d like to pick up yourself! Previously loved wedding items are often in just as fabulous shape as they were when first used, and think of what you can do with the money you save!

{Marketplace Update!}

Here are just a few of the recent items to be listed on the WG Marketplace ….

Black and White Damask Table Numbers

Custom-designed jewellery by SeaFlower Studios

Wholesale Decor and Centrepiece Vases

Niagara Falls Destination Weddings | Niagara Parks Commission | Niagara Convention & Civic Centre

Happy Hump Day!

Last week, before the weekend craziness of coordinating a wedding ensued, I had the privilege and honour of accompanying the fabulous Missy Hirons of the new Niagara Convention and Civic Centre on her site visits with the wonderful Sue Zareski of the Niagara Parks Commission. Despite the inclement weather, the three of us ventured out to visit a few of the most popular wedding ceremony sites in Niagara, to perfectly complement a destination or pseudo-destination wedding reception at either one of the Parks Commission’s venues (if you’re hosting a smaller wedding) or at the brand new, state-of-the-art Convention Centre!

Our morning began with meeting Chef Elbert at Queenston Heights – who has had the distinct role of cooking for some really big-named celebrities (I won’t disclose the details – but we all know who they are!). Chef talked to us about his venue and its stunning backdrop for your wedding ceremony.

Following our visit at Queenston Heights, Sue took Missy and I to the Niagara Parks’ Botanical Gardens – another popular wedding ceremony destination. Here, not only are the perfectly-manicured gardens a stunning backdrop for wedding photography, the Butterfly Conservatory also offers a unique wedding venue option for a destination wedding.

Also on the Niagara Parks Commission’s list of fantastic wedding venues, Edgewaters Restaurant. With its breathtaking view of both the Canadian and American Falls, Edgewaters offers a beautiful venue for a wedding ceremony or reception on its outdoor patio or in the enclosed restaurant.

The next stop on our Niagara Parks tour was the famous Floral Showhouse. While, in the past, I’ve had many brides go to the Showhouse to take wedding photos, I didn’t realize that ceremonies could take place on site as well, and small, intimate wedding receptions could be hosted right on the property too! … definitely a multi-functional space, and with its lush, tropical backdrop, the Floral Showhouse completely embraces its destination feel!

We departed from the Floral Showhouse to make our way to Elements for lunch, but made a quick stop at Oak Hall – another popular wedding photo location (with special permission from the Parks Commission!) and an amazing venue to host small, intimate, private functions (think: couture bridal shower, intimate rehearsal dinner, etc).

- Oak Hall also comes with a tremendous history (as does most of the Niagara Parkway) so be sure to take a look at what Wikipedia has to say about it!

The final stop on our Niagara tour was Elements on The Falls: “Dining as close as you can get to the Falls!”. Sue invited Missy and I for lunch, and this was our view: (taken from my iPhone, so pardon the quality!)

Our food was fantastic as well!

Lastly, after our delicious meal, Sue took Missy and I over to the new Pop and Lolly’s,  the new interactive candy shop! According to the Niagara Parks’ website, “… amid sparkling, vibrant colors and accessories, a confectionary chef works at a chocolate station or dips fresh fruit or candy into a decadent chocolate fountain. You’ll see the art of specialized hard candy being made and find a wide selection of candy and gifts, from traditional favorites to unique containers ready to fill from our colorful wall of bulk candy.” – and see we did!

Personally, I was particularly interested in the wedding stuff! – personalized bride and groom candy apples, decadent wedding themed truffles, and personalized hard candies!

I think the samples were my favourite part :-)

All in all, Missy and I learned so much from Sue about weddings in Niagara – not only about the ceremony venues the Niagara Parks Commission has to offer, but also the top-notch service and quality extended to all the brides who cross Niagara’s threshold. Between the NPC’s diversely beautiful venues, and the Convention and Civic Centre’s state-of-the-art reception facilities, there are some definitely memorable Ever-After’s in the making ~ and I’m so lucky to be a part of it!

Contract and Agreement Safety for Small Business Owners | Wedding Vendors |

Happy Friday everyone!

Today’s blog post isn’t  for brides-to-be. It is from one of my Brides-To-Be, reaching out to all the weddings vendors and small business owners who can benefit from this information.

Attention Business Owners:

Hi!  My name is Leah Cole and I currently work as an Applications Support Specialist for a large corporation.  I am also a Bride-to-Be, working with my Fiancé to plan our wedding for September of 2011.  At work, I am responsible for managing document templates in various applications, as well as ensuring that our corporate documents and forms are created correctly, thoroughly reviewed, and protected.  This is why I was in complete shock when we received a Word contract electronically from one of our wedding vendors that was completely unprotected and editable!

My first thoughts were: “My goodness!  What if one of their clients changed the terms?  Would they even know?”  Evidently, my job is so ingrained in me that I immediately began work on protecting the contract with user input fields and a password; however, I hid my compulsive reaction and did not discuss my concern with our vendor right away.  Needless to say, as we began to know each other better, I couldn’t keep the secret anymore.  She was taken aback by my worry over her contract and was immediately interested in rectifying it.

We are currently working on re-formatting and protecting her agreement, and I would like to extend the same service to other small business owners that may be in the same situation.  There are quite a few options including dynamic Word forms, interactive Adobe Acrobat forms (for those that prefer PDF files), and other effective, but less frequently used forms, such as Excel.  Rates are negotiable, and typically range from $50 to $100 depending on the size of the contract, the preferred program, and the number of features that are requested.  The result will be your existing contract with limited user functionality, so that your clients can only access the areas where they are required to provide information.

My biggest concern is that small business owners and their contracts are protected against potential manipulation and misuse.  Small changes, even just to the punctuation in a document, can alter the intent dramatically.  The following is a shocking example.

A Contract Law professor wrote the words, “A woman without her man is nothing.” on the blackboard and asked the students to punctuate it correctly:

The Men wrote:   “A woman, without her man, is nothing.”

The Women wrote:   “A woman: without her, man is nothing.”

In my experience, minor word changes in a document are hard enough to spot, but punctuation is almost impossible to identify without a trained eye and a very thorough review.  You should never have to re-read your contracts to ensure that the agreement was not changed without your knowledge.  Protect yourself and lower your liability!

Best regards,

Leah Cole

On a personal note from me to you…. Leah and Bryan are an absolutely amazing couple – and I am truly grateful for the time this Bride-to-Be has taken out of her own hectic schedule to share this information with all of us! Leah, thank you!!  (and now back to planning your Happily Ever After!!)

WeddingGirl.ca Bridal Marketplace Update! | Buy and Sell New and Used Wedding Items

… because no one needs 250 votive candle holders the day after their wedding!

When I first created WeddingGirl.ca, I wanted to do things differently. I didn’t want to be like every other wedding planner, and I didn’t want this website to be like every other wedding planning website. One of the things I quickly realized as a planner who specializes in planning on a budget, was that gently used wedding items are usually the exact same as brand new ones (can YOU tell that someone put flowers in that vase before you??) – so why not save money, make back some money, and we all live happily ever after?? With this in mind, I had my amazing web programmers help me to create the WeddingGirl.ca Bridal Marketplace.

The WG Marketplace is an opportunity for brides to buy and sell The Dress (bridal, bridesmaid, you-name-it!), The Sparkle (accessories, jewellery, all things fabulous), and The Details (all those things that comes together to make your day amazing!). Browsing through the Marketplace, you’ll stumble upon vases, candles, crystals, and more! Some of these items are brand new, some have been used (usually just once!), and all of them are nothing short of fabulous (and super affordable!)

With the 2010 Wedding Season slowly wrapping up, it’s time for us to go back to updating the Marketplace on a regular basis and actively connecting previously-loved items with blushing brides-to-be!

There will now also be a “Looking For” component to the Bridal Marketplace – so if there’s something you don’t see, but wish you did, let us know!

If you are a designer who custom-creates wedding day items, you’re welcome to post your products as well!  Questions? – drop us a line:  info{at}WeddingGirl.ca

Happy Shopping!!

Fall Harvest Inspired Weddings | Dinner Reception Tablescapes on a budget

As the autumn leaves turn their brilliant hue…. two in love will say, “I Do!” – One of my favourite quotes I’ve ever read on a wedding ceremony program inspires decor all around this season. I love Fall! The air is crisp. The colours are beautiful. The food is delicious!!

One of our WG brides is planning a Fall Harvest-inpired wedding for October of next year at the fabulously intimate (and stylishly rustic) Navy Hall in Niagara-On-The-Lake. At a recent event design consultation with Bride-To-Be and my WG sidekick, Catriona, we inspired our bride with my head-over-heels-love of tablescapes. A perfectly lavish decor style to accent long, rectangular King’s Tables, a beautiful tablescape doesn’t need to be super expensive! As we discussed ways to create decor magic (on a budget), our Fall Harvest bride told us about some of the decor items she’s purchased already (some wrought iron pumpkins, candle holder lanterns, etc). She was concerned about buying 15-20 of any individual decor item, as some were significantly pricier than what she planned on spending for wedding centrepieces. Ofcourse, there’s a simple WG solution to this!

When designing tablescapes (at your wedding or on your dinner table), you don’t need multiples of identical items to create a repetitive look – all you need is symmetry! I told our bride not to buy any more of the expensive items, but for all the decor pieces she finds from now on, just to buy equal amounts of them. Our design plan is to mirror the tablescapes at the two, long, side-by-side guest tables, with a similar tablescape created on the “head table” portion of the table arrangement, but not identical to the other two. Make sure all the decor pieces have similar elements that tie together the over-arching theme, but they don’t need to be exactly the same. And the least expensive option for Autumn-inspired wedding decor? dried leaves! lots of them. scattered throughout the centrepiece (and they also double over as elegant place setting accents!)

While doing my inspiration research for this particular bride, I came across some fantastic DIY decor ideas – with “crusted” candles and pumpkins topping the charts! Originally found at HGtv.com, just take your Fall-coloured pillar candles, apply double-sided table around them, and roll in split peas, lentils, beans – in all different colours, shapes, and sizes. You can see specific instructions here!

You don’t have to be having an Autumn inspired, Fall Harvest wedding to be excited about these decor ideas! Use these fabulous elements to adorn your Thanksgiving table, or the October/November decor around your house:

[Soup served in a gourd]

[Pumpkin table numbers - or place settings]

[Pumpkin drink cooler | Pumpkin Candle Holder | Pumpkin Luminaries]

… on that note: Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!!
